SHRM CAFÉ: CREATING DIVERSITY IN THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The diversity in the work environment brings many benefits from the rich perspective and creativity of employees. The diversity can be understood as the difference in working style, personal culture, culture of each departments and age groups but still towards the company's goals and mission.

It is one of the sustainable development directions in engaging employees and expanding human resources. Understanding this, PACE Institute of Management and SHRM Vietnam cooperated to organize "SHRM Café" event in Ho Chi Minh City on November 28, 2018 with the topic "Creating diversity in the working environment" and the participation of many HR professionals from many domestic corporations and businesses.

This event was led by Mr. Vu Duc Tri The - Solution Director at PACE Institute of Management and SHRM Representative in Vietnam. HR professionals discussed and answered questions as well as challenges. The benefits of diversity and inclusion in the working environment through tangible aspects such as regional expertise, culture, language, goals, ... and intangible aspects such as belief, value, calculation way,…

From the challenges of a diverse working environment ...

As Mr. Vu Duc Tri The said: “The diversity in the workplace is important, but more than that, do we anticipate its limitations?”. Diversity in human resources brings many challenges for human resource management. Thereby, HR professionals had the opportunities to share the experience together about difficult situations in reality.

The difference in culture will become the diversity in leadership ideology. For example, the director is a foreigner (coming from high-standard cultures), so he only focuses on the evaluation of work results, unlike the leader in Vietnam always focus on the attitude. This affects the morale of employees due to not adapting to this cultural difference. This challenge is more easily seen at Japanese companies in Vietnam, the punctual disciplined culture of Japanese people conflict with the habit of being flexible in work time of Marketing staff.

In addition, the difference in age also creates many difficulties for HR. For example, while young people are happy in internal picnic events, older employees is thinking that is inappropriate. Therefore, HR should focus on common goals while creating many activities and various action to combine the diversity of thoughts, perceptions, views and spiritual values.

... To the long-term development benefits for businesses

Organizations need to create a diverse environment to attract talents, help build a team with synergy from different strengths and encourage the development of healthy competition between individuals and departments.

In order to be able to do this, HR professionals can set up a supporting group of members from many different departments; contribute to increase the effectiveness of internal communication, timely acquisition of expectations, needs and employee feedback.

"Corporate culture is like an internal environment to be founded on everything else" - Mr. Vu Duc Tri The said. An enterprise can accept and develop diversity in corporate culture where will also create responsible culture, forming a constructive attitude and healthy competition to grow together.
