SHRM CAFÉ: THE NECESSITY OF BUILDING LEARNING CULTURE IN ENTERPRISES

With the incalculable change of the current economic context, the enterprises’ interest of investments in training and development is not only to increase efficiency, improve employee performance; but also to ensure that enterprises constantly recreate and avoid the risk of falling behind. According to a report, the company proposed comprehensive training programs with income higher than 218% per employee than those that did not.

Understanding the importance of staff training and development as well as learning culture in enterprises, on January 8, PACE  Institute of Management with SHRM in Vietnam continued to organize SHRM Café event on January 8, 2019 with the topic "Learning Culture" in Ho Chi Minh City. The topic had received positive responses and participation from the Community of HR Professionals from operating enterprises in Vietnam.
The SHRM Café guidance is Mr. Vu Duc Tri The - Solution Direction of the PACE Institute of Management and Representatives of SHRM in Vietnam, and Ms. Tran Thi Thu - HRBP Manager at INSEE Vietnam. The attendees exchanged and presented ideas on the following aspects: What is the culture of learning? What are the indication of an organization with a learning culture? And what is practical experience in building and maintaining learning culture in the enterprise?

Concerning the concept of learning culture, there are opinions that it is a set of values expressing the spirit of learning desire from a group of people through actions day by day, not only in courses, but also in everywhere and even at the opportunity to learn from mistakes or experiences from others.

Mr. Vu Duc Tri The also shared his personal experience: "To know whether I am studying or not, I often observe and notice my mood while I’m absorbing new ideas, sometimes it is counter-thinking. That is time for reminding me to be open to explore, learn more, help me gain knowledge and see things with different perspectives. ”

Some indications of an enterprise are interested in building a learning culture include: supported by business leaders; mentioned in core values; investing budget for training and improving products and services; encouraged inter-departmental work programs, or new projects.

On the contrary, an enterprise that is considered "disabled" in learning will have the following signs: employees only care about their work; enterprises see only their competitors physically, but they don't really understand that their biggest rival is themselves; illusions of responsibility after every mistake without solutions to fix; rolling into daily work too much and forgetting the need of recognization and understanding the enterprise from a system perspective; lack of continuous regeneration spirit, oversleeping on victory, illusions of past experience; image of leaders is always right.

At the end of the program, the HR community shared valuable practical experiences to learn and apply for their businesses. Some of the experiences are: organizing monthly seminars, each session will be shared by a department; management is involved in training and committed to investment in learning and development; encouraging the spirit of proposing solutions when making issues, policies of internal promotion / inheritance to create opportunities and incentives for low-level people; impact on the depth, help employees understand why they need to learn, and learn for what ...
