SHRM CAFÉ: WORKING WITH MILLENNIALS

PACE  Institute of Management and SHRM Vietnam collaborated to organize SHRM Café event with the participation of HR experts from many large domestic corporations and enterprises on October 24, 2018 in Ho Chi Minh City.

One of the current HR trend is working with Millennials which is attracted attention by the HR community. This generation was born from 1980 to 1996 and will be the main group of the labor force. The most effective way for adjusting HR strategy and development organization is understand Millennials clearly from characteristics, work motivations to key factors which take impact of choosing job and engaging with their organization.

That also is the reason for the topic “Working with Millennials” in this event "SHRM Café" which was led by Mr. Vu Duc Tri The - Solution Director of PACE Institute of Management and SHRM Representative in Vietnam. HR professionals were divided into groups to present and discuss ideas about the features of Millennials.

Millennials is completely different from the previous generations because they grew up with the development of digital technology, they use the Internet to connect people and also work on this technology platform. Therefore, Millennials give prominence to the diversity and individuality of each person, contribute to create a rich distinctive characteristic system. Although many businesses recognize Millennials’ roles and importance, leaders misinterpret this generation’s needs, wishes or identify them as one. For that reason, HR have to face a lot of accompanying issues such as high rates of turnover, difficulties in connecting and retaining talent, ...

With these challenges, attendees exchanged stories, views and experiences comfortably about Millennials through group discussions. Then each group offers different solutions for HR to connect closely with Millennials.

“Each generation has pros and cons. If you can take advantage of strength and cohesion to create a sense of "belonging", generation diversity will be an advantage with the enthusiasm and youth that bring much more real out-of-box thinking to the company.”- Mr. Vu Duc Tri The said.

Besides, Mr. Vu Duc Tri The synthesized and summarized the topic with the suitable HR methods for Millennials. According to him, special conditions of benefits and remuneration can not attract young people like their previous generations. Instead of that, Millennials care about soft elements related to corporate culture such as flexible working environment, office design, ...

Millennials desire to assert themselves. Therefore, they want to be recognized, encouraged at the right time and given opportunities to try at a variety position of jobs, there are the key factors in their work motivation and engage with the company.

At the end of the event, attendees had more useful knowledge to apply in daily tasks. The event "SHRM Café" has received the attention and positive response of attendees and will continue to become a place to connect HR professionals in Vietnam.
